OSTEOARTHRITIS treatment and yoga exercise for it





WHAT IS OSTEOARTHRITIS

 Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease affecting people over 60years of age and above of which its risk factors include heredit, obesity, injuries, abnormal joint anatomy, and occupations that leads to overuse of joints. Its involves one or more joints.
    
 Osteoarthritis is a joint inflammation due to a breakdown of the cartilage( an elastic tissue in joints that covers the end of bones and prevents bones from slidding on each other  i.e preventing bone frictions) in the knee joint which leads to joint pains swelling and stiffness.

Therapy Treatment of osteoarthritis include

Pain management, edema management, swelling management, joint mobility and flexibility, energy conservation techniques, joint protection techniques...

Methods of achieving therapy aims include:

1.use of heat therapy to improve blood circulations, and reduce pain and swelling
2.use of cold therapy to reduce swelling and control blood circulation.
3. Use of infrared lamps to improve blood circulation
4. Use of electrical pain machines such as tens machines, Ems machines, pulse massagers etc
5..muscle massagers
6. Prescriptions of knee joint braces and slabs such as knee brace to prevent excessive stress to the knee joint, to protect the knee and improve blood circulation by providing warmth to the knee.
7. Beginning of gentle static stretching exercises followed by passive and active exercises and stretching exercises to the knee joint to prevent joint stiffness , to improve mobility and joint flexibility,
8.beginning of yoga exercises targeted on the knee to improve blood circulation's and flexibility
9. Teaching patients energy conservation techniques such as the use of larger joints to perform tasking activities, observing rest in between works, etc
10. Teaching joint protection techniques such as teaching patients how to bend ,squats, knee in appropriate ways.
11. Teaching patients proper lying and sleeping positioning such as The use of folded towel ounder the neck and a pillow under the knee when lying in supine position (facing up) and using pillows in between the neck and shoulder with legs folded when lying In a side lying position...
